ABOUT GEMMA- WEDDING DRESS DESIGNER
Hi ! I’m Gemma, the designer and owner of Gemma Leakey, and I’m really glad you’re here. I’ve been a Bridalwear designer for more than 10 years, and I’m deeply in love with what I do. The chance to create a garment that will hold some of life’s happiest moments and memories is just so special, and whether it’s a one-of-a-kind bespoke design, or a dress I’m creating for one of my bijou capsule collections, the excitement, care and love that goes into it from me is the same.
How it all started..
It’s tricky to say ‘fashion’s always been my passion’ without sounding cheesy, but it’s true! I studied fashion design at college and moved on to working on womenswear collections for some of the leading UK high street brands. For me, a well-made item of clothing is like art that moves. As the designer, it’s my job to give it the spark of creativity and potential, and then it truly comes to life once you own it and put it on. Your clothing plus your personality, the way you walk, how you hold yourself – that’s the magic formula!
More than simply gorgeous, intricate craftsmanship though, my true passion is for fashion that’s eco-aware; sustainable designs and gowns that exude style without compromising the environment. My dresses are synonymous with simple, clean lines and elegant details - perfect for the modern eco-conscious bride.
This love of blending sustainability with fashion stems from my sell-out graduate collection. This collection was made entirely from discarded fabrics and offcuts, it caught the eye of the womenswear buyers at Selfridges and sold out within minutes. The rest is history!
I’m really proud of my work, and my bridal portfolio has, to date, featured in top wedding publications including: Brides magazine, Perfect Wedding magazine and Vogue.
Outside the studio...
I’m a proud mum of two beautiful children who keep me very busy in my down time!
I am now based in a beautiful suburb situated on Australia's stunning sunshine Coast with a life is full of long sunny days, beautiful sandy beaches and idyllic wedding destinations!
